Starting therapy can bring up a mix of feelings — curiosity, hope, nervousness, even doubt. That's completely normal.
If you're considering therapy but aren't sure what to expect, you're not alone. Many people feel unsure about what the first session will be like or how to prepare. This post will walk you through what typically happens and how to make the most of your first appointment.
What to Expect:
- A warm welcome. Your therapist's goal is to create a safe, non-judgmental environment where you feel comfortable.
- Getting to know you. Your therapist will likely ask about what brought you in, your current challenges, and a bit about your background.
- Collaborative goal-setting. You'll start to identify what you'd like to work on together. There's no pressure to know all the answers right away — it's okay if you're not sure yet.
How to Prepare:
- Reflect on your goals. Think about what feels difficult right now and what you're hoping to get out of therapy.
- Jot down questions. Bring anything you've been wondering about, like how sessions work or what therapy might look like long-term.
- Come as you are. There's no right way to show up — feeling unsure, emotional, or even resistant is okay.
Therapy is a process — not a performance.
Starting is a courageous step, and showing up for yourself is something to be proud of. The first session is about beginning a connection and building trust.
